Japanese food contact materials Testing
Japan had already pointed out the issue of food contacting material in its Food Hygeine Law 1947.The code prohibited to produce, sale and use those food containers and packaging materials which contain substances that are potentially harmful to human health. There are three sets of standards in the Food Packaging Standards issued by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. Firstly, the general standard regulated the content of heavy metal in all of food containers and parkaging materials, especially lead. For exaple, the percent of lead must be lower than 5% and in tinplate and it to be lower than 10% in other metal containers. This standard also prescribed that the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare must give any synthetic color its aprrove before it can be used in food parkaging materials. Secondly, specific standards based on the classification of materials set up the standards for materials like metal can, glass,ceramic, synthetic resin, rubber etc..Thirdly, specific standards based on the different use of the materials set up the standards for materials that have specific uses. E.g. Packing for pasteurized milk, street food and so on.
